The drug, which is already being sold as a tablet, is the first approved by the US FDA to treat impotence, the first of its kind in women. The pills work by boosting blood flow to the genitals, which may lead to heightened sex drive and erectile function, researchers have found.
"Viagra is an obvious candidate for this use of the pill," said Dr Catherine Sharlip, from the division of obstetrics and gynaecology at George Washington University in the US.
"The pill's efficacy in preventing and treating premature ejaculation is now confirmed, with many clinicians now recommending that this treatment be used instead of Viagra in patients with premature ejaculation," she added.
The new pill, which is being developed by Pfizer, will be available in packs of 50 tablets containing the drug at a time when it's the first approved by the FDA.
Viagra was developed by Pfizer, which has also been working with pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson to develop the drug in the US.
Pfizer's patent for Viagra expired in March 2013, and Pfizer's patent for the drug expired in 2013.
However, the company has now filed for a new patent on the pill, which will be launched next year.
"Our hopes are high that this new product will be approved by the FDA and will be available for purchase in the UK in the form of packs of 50 tablets," said Dr Michael J. Geddes, a Pfizer medical director who led the FDA's work.
The new pill, dubbed "Viagra," is expected to be available in packs of 100 tablets, which are already sold as a tablet.
It is the first pill approved for treating impotence.
"We know that erectile dysfunction can be caused by a number of factors, including diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking and certain medications," Dr Geddes said in a statement.
"We hope to increase awareness of this condition and the drug's ability to help treat it."
Viagra, which is not currently approved by the US FDA for sale in the UK, has been available on prescription in pharmacies for several years, but has faced challenges due to a lack of supply. It has faced challenges with the supply chain and counterfeit versions of the drug have been introduced.
While Pfizer is working on developing a new version of Viagra called "Sildenafil Citrate", the company will also be working with Johnson & Johnson to develop the drug with the help of a new, lower-dose formulation known as a PDE5 inhibitor.
The first of its kind drugs will be sold under the brand name Revatio, which is sold under other names including Vitaros, Cialis and Levitra.
Revatio is also on the market in the UK.
Revatio's patent expires in 2013, but Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, are available under a different name, called Revatio-A. Viagra is the first drug to be approved by the FDA for treating sexual dysfunction and Revatio is available as a tablet.
A pack of 50 tablets will be available for purchase in the US from pharmacies beginning next month.

CVS Corp., a generic-drugstore company, has said its CVS Caremark and CVS Pharmacy prices were the same as those for the brand-name Viagra. That same prescription drug will cost $49.99 and $59.99, respectively.
CVS has not revealed the price of the three drugs it has been trying to market. CVS spokesman David Healy said the company did not respond to a request for comment.
CVS has said its prices for Viagra and its brand-name version of Cialis are the same as those for its competitor drugs, such as Tadalafil and Spedra.
The CVS brand-name drug is not available as a generic, but has been available as a generic drug for a number of years, Healy said.
